The Flavors of Abruzzo » How dry I am
The sights, sounds and flavors of the region.

As I mentioned before, my parents are here visiting and they wanted to buy us an early Christmas present.

Here it is (drumroll please)……

A DRYER!

Many of you may not think that this is a big deal, but actually, dryers are still sort of a new thing in my neck of the woods. Everyone hangs their clothes outside on the line. If the weather doesn’t permit, they must then hang them inside, consequently requiring a few days to actually dry. Of course, depending upon where you hang them inside, they may get a little musty smelling too.

The negative effects of drying your clothes on the line are the fact that your towels, socks, etc. aren’t soft and fluffy, plus you have to iron everything. And I mean, everything. Now, I draw the line at ironing underwear and I don’t iron my sheets unless I’m having company. Then I iron the sheets that will go on their bed. But, t-shirts and other things that you may have never dreamed would need to be ironed all need to be done. And, it’s not as easy as when they come out of the dryer either. I used to iron shirts and slacks for work and they just needed a touch up. No, these things here have the wrinkles ingrained in them requiring a heavy duty iron.

So, needless to say, I’m pretty excited about my dryer even though I’m worried about the eventual electric bill.

This dryer is a bit different though than the ones we had back in the US. There’s no vent to the outside. Instead it collects the water in a plastic container that needs to be emptied after each load.

You can hook the hose up to a drain if you have one nearby too. I figure I can use the water for my plants. Plus, there’s a condenser that needs to be cleaned once a month.

So, yesterday I did my first load in the dryer and it came out great. It looks like its drizzly and damp again, so I guess I’ll be drying today too.
