The Flavors of Abruzzo » How crazy to throw that piece of pizza in the well that stinks
The sights, sounds and flavors of the region.
October 5th, 2007 by Administrator

Yesterday, as I was preparing for a lesson with a student today, I was gathering together English tongue twisters to help practice pronunciation.

Tongue-twisters, as I’m sure you know are phrases that are difficult to articulate properly, causing the speaker to mix up sounds and sometimes even utter swear words in place of the normal words.

According to the Guiness Book of World Records, the most difficult tongue-twister in English is:

The sixth sick sheikh’s sixth sheep’s sick.

So, I decided to try to find some in Italian. In Italian a tongue-twister is known as a scoglilingua (literally tongue-melter).

I asked O and he provided this one:

Che pazzo buttare quel pezzo di pizza nel pozzo che puzza (hence the title of this post)

Plus, I found these:

Oggi sereno non è, domani sereno sarà e se non sarà sereno si rasserenerà.

Barbaro barbuto barbiere, perché barbaramente, barbasti la barba al mio barbaro barbuto barba.

Sul mare ci sono nove navi nuove una delle nove non vuole navigare.

Il Papa pesa il pepe a Pisa, Pisa pesa il pepe al Papa. (reminds me of Peter Piper)

C’è il questore in questura a quest’ora? “No non c’è il questore in questura a quest’ora, perché se il questore fosse in questura a quest’ora sarebbe questa la questura!

This one uses the pazzo sounds like the first one

Sopra a quel palazzo c’è un povero cane pazzo. Chi darà un pezzo di pane a quel povero pazzo cane?

And this one is just impossible!

Se l’arcivescovo di Costantinopoli si disarcivescoviscostantinopolizzasse, ti disarcivescoviscostantinopolizzeresti pure tu? No, io non mi disarcivescoviscostantinopolizzerei se l’arcivescovo di Costantinopoli si disarcivescoviscostantinopolizzasse!

Have Fun!
