Our town is somewhat off the beaten path.  OK, let’s be honest, it’s quite a bit out of the way. Most visitors to Italy pass through Rome, Florence, Venice, or the Amalfi Coast, not even coming close to where we are, but, every once in a while we do get some American visitors here in town.  Since we don’t get many who come through, it’s a noteworthy event.  Our visitors are mostly people with relatives here or who have ancestral ties to the village.

When someone comes through, I usually hear about it.  Someone tells me they saw some Americans in town (they assume that they’re American anyway since they’re not speaking Italian) and sometimes I’ll get a call from the hotel owner and I’ll go down and meet them.  That way, I can help them out if the need anything, plus it gives me an opportunity to speak English.  It’s a shame, but I’m sure there are quite a few who pass through for a few hours, just to see the town, and never speak to anyone.  I’ve often thought of putting a sign up “English spoken here” and point it towards my house. 

Last week we had two gentlemen come through who were visiting a cousin here in town.  I won’t mention their names for the sake of privacy, but we had a nice visit and I was able to arrange for them to visit the castle museum.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get their email addresses.

Later, I went back to my web page and saw that quite a few of their family members had visited.  They have a family message board and had put my site on there.  So, if you’re reading this, you know who you are – thanks for the visits!
