Puppy Love
I admit it I’m a sucker for animals - especially dogs. We’ve got a few strays here in town and I keep buying food for them at the supermarket. O says pretty soon I’ll be feeding every stray in town, but he just shakes his head, smiles, and we buy the food anyway.
First there’s Scooby Doo. I know, it’s a stupid name, but we started calling him that as a joke and it stuck. He’s a beagle and really intelligent (for a dog). We think someone dropped him off because he’s gun-shy. Beagles are hunting dogs and this guy is afraid of any loud noises. When the trash truck comes by he runs for cover. One Sunday he showed up in the piazza and has been in town
ever since. Apparently, he has found himself a nice spot to sleep and a few kind benefactors.
Scooby usually comes by at least once a day. He knocks on the door. Yes, he really does. Or maybe I should say he scrapes at the door. One way or another, he lets us know he’s here. If he sees us at the window, he comes running around to the door. Now he’s figured out what time I go for my morning walk, and he’s usually at the door waiting to accompany me. Afterwards he goes off on his merry way to chase cats, or whatever dogs do in their free time.
Why don’t I adopt him, you ask? Well, I live in an apartment with no yard at all. I mean zip - no yard. Our land is outside of town and I wouldn’t want to adopt him and then stick him out there by himself. When he doesn’t show up for a day or two, I always hope that someone has adopted him. Until then, I’ll keep feeding him and putting flea spray on him.
Another stray just had 6 little puppies - I don’t know if you can see them in this picture. She just showed up one day too and hangs out around the bus stop. That’s probably where someone
dropped her off. We have a sneaking suspicion that it was Scooby Doo who did the dastardly deed. Judging from the amount of food dishes laying around her chosen area, I would say there are at least 6 people feeding her. We’re hoping that once the puppies get old enough, some people will adopt them and maybe even her.
Sometimes I wish I could adopt them all. But, unfortunately, I have no place to put them. In the meantime, I’ll keep feeding them and hoping someone with a nice yard will decide to take them home.
